JUNe WINE OF THE MONTH

GavrocheGrenache-Syrah, Château L‘Ermite d’Auzan

The original estate was founded in the 11th Century by the hermits of Sainte Cécile d’Estagel Abbaye and it made wine for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostella. The modern iteration of this historic estate encompasses 80ha of glorious, south-facing vineyards planted on sandstone soils and strewn with smooth pebbles from the Durance river valley. This unoaked red is made from the estate's young vines (on the whole they have an average age 10-15 years) and the vineyards overlook the Camargue. After harvesting the fruit undergoes a short period of maceration extract colour and juice without an excess of tannins, before a natural ferment at controlled temperatures occurs. The Grenache in the blend gives the wine a bright, fruity character that is reminiscent of cherries, supported by a touch of spicy complexity and a crunchy, fresh acidity.

November Wine of the month

The Francophile Syrah 2022, The Liberator

The Francophile Syrah is grown and produced at De Morgenzon in Stellenbosch. De Morgenzon translates from Africaans as ‘The Morning Sun’. This was the name granted to the farm by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1699 because the altitude and the orientation means that this estate is the first property in Stellenboschkloof to benefit from the sun’s early morning rays. This wine possesses the ripe fruit and sunny disposition of its South African origin, but with a nod towards the elegance of its old world relations. There is plenty of rich dark fruit - think brambles and ripe black cherry - and fruit sits alongside warming baking spices and savoury, smoky notes. All this is supported by smooth tannins and fresh acidity.
